Addenbrooke’s Hospital
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – Addenbrooke’s Hospital – has always had an onsite clinical waste incinerator, the plant has gone through many upgrades to be fully compliant to all current regulation, one of the very few NHS Trust owned and operated left in the country.
We sell spare capacity on the plants to third party customers, and are permitted to accept all categories of clinical wastes, category 18 01 and 18 02 within the EWC codes.
We accept waste into the facility from all parts of the country, and Addenbrooke’s has an excellent reputation of being experienced and knowledgeable with customers, industry and the regulators.

The three main areas of focus include;
1. The supply of Sharpsmart and Clinismart safety collectors, these are used for the safe point of care collection, containment and ultimate disposal of sharps, infectious, medicinal, cytotoxic, pharmaceutical waste as well as the optional collection and recycling of used medical devices.
2. Sub-contract disposal of wastes under back-to back agreements with waste treatment companies accredited for the disposal of the aforementioned waste streams.
3. Training and auditing services specifically designed to ensure complete compliance and optimisation of the customer waste streams. The Sharpsmart service is currently being used by over 80 NHS organisations throughout the UK.

Our clinical plant enables Veolia to treat and securely dispose of waste arising from NHS Trusts and pharmaceutical companies, including medical instruments and pharmaceutical products. The plant generates steam which is used to supply energy to the main Energy Recovery Facility which produces enough power for 40,000 local homes.
